Democracy / Democratization

Perspectives on Politics

This thematic semester, organized by the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) of Saint-Germain-en-Laye (near Paris) and the Centre for legal and political philosophy (CPJP), intends to meet political and legal experts by inviting them to confront their point of view on contemporary democracy.

Researchers will be invited to decline their analysis in a double way.

First of all, it comes to question the democratic phenomenon as it exists at different levels of Government. If the State is the historic crucible of formation of democracy in modern times, it is necessary to scan double taking overflow, on the one hand, the emergence of democratic forms at the bottom, on the otherhand, the progressive affirmation of a transnational democratic project.

Secondly, this thematic semester intends to query democracy from three different angles: as a concept, based on a story but also a set of principles and values; as a set of standards, procedures and institutions; as a set of social practices.
